Marc-André Dandeneau

General Manager, Hôtel Champlain & Auberge Place d’Armes

I have been in the Hotel Industry for 13 years.
I have worked in 8 hotels in Canada + Internationally.

My first job/position in the hotel industry was Concierge

The number of times I have…

opened a hotel: 1
renovated a hotel: 1
removed a dead body: 0
escorted a guest off the property: 12
seen a ghost in a hotel: 2
kept “it” con fidential: 10
driven a guest to the hospital: 3
dealt with an “Act of God”: 8
performed Housekeeping Duties (made beds, scrubbed toilets): 10
taken a sick day: 0

What does it take to be a GM? What’s involved day to day?
Flexible and being good at everything!

The three things I can’t live without are:
1- My computer
2- My iPhone
3- My bottle of Windex

My caffeine fix: Coffee – at least 5 a day!

When I wake up, the first thing I think about is checking my emails and checking my hotel occupancy

The Hotelier (or person) that has inspired me the most is Benoit Sirard, ex-DG of the Clarendon Hotel

My most embarrassing encounter with a hotel guest was to deal with a complaint…from one of my ex!

My most famous hotel guest was all the NHL hockey teams players!

My most bizarre special request from a hotel guest (or staff member) was to bill his office for his reservation as an alibi when he was somewhere else.

Best CANADIAN hotel for a entertaining/fun/dirty/wild weekend: Le Centre Sheraton Montreal Hotel

Best CANADIAN hotel for business travel: Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa
Best CANADIAN convention hotel: Le Westin Montreal
Best CANADIAN airport hotel: The new ALT hotel in Halifax!
Best CANADIAN resort: Hotel Tadoussac in the Côte-Nord (Quebec)
Best RESTAURANT in a CANADIAN hotel: Restaurant Julien in Montréal

The best advice given to me: to take nothing personal!

The Hotel amenity I can’t live without is in-room Starbucks coffee.

The worst feeling in the world is being caught by an employee when we do something we ask them to avoid to do.

If I could change one thing about the hotel industry, it would it be the artificial way of thinking.

If I could meet one person (alive or dead) it would it be: Conrad Hilton

If I had to do it all over again, I would: stay hotel concierge!

I prefer:

Night over Day
Summer over Winter
East Coast over West Coast
Sunset over Sunrise
Loud over Quiet
Rock Over Classical Music

The “best hotel story” of my career.
We had an explosion in front of the hotel and we had to evacuate all the guests. It was the day after our Christmas party and we were all hungover…the worst day ever!
